Terms of Use

What this is
AI or Not is a non-commercial, educational, hobby project. It maps AI-related advertisements people scan in public. There is no company, no revenue, no investors, no team. Built and operated by a single person for fun and to explore what the spread of AI advertising looks like in the real world.
No commercial use
The service is provided free of charge with no expectation of payment, donations, or compensation in any form. There is no paid tier, no advertising network, no affiliate links, no data sales, and no monetization mechanism of any kind. The operator does not generate revenue from this service.
Where it works
AI or Not is accessible globally. The operator does not specifically market to or target users in any particular jurisdiction.
Data protection commitments
Even though this is a hobby project, the operator makes good-faith efforts to respect user privacy under reasonable interpretations of GDPR, the UK Data Protection Act, Brazil’s LGPD, California CCPA / CPRA, and other applicable frameworks:
- Lawful basis: consent (you tap the shutter) plus legitimate interest (running the service).
- Data minimization: we only collect what is needed (photo, GPS coordinates of the scan, an anonymous user ID). No email, name, phone, or other identifiers.
- Storage limitation: non-AI photos are deleted immediately. AI ad photos persist only until you delete them or until the operator removes them.
- Right to erasure: you can delete your scans from the app at any time, or contact the operator to wipe all data tied to your anonymous ID.
- Right of access: you can request a copy of all data tied to your anonymous ID by contacting the operator.
- Privacy by design: photos are private by default, faces are auto-blurred on-device before upload, and public sharing requires explicit opt-in.
- No automated decision-making with legal effect: the AI classification has no consequence beyond labeling a scan in this app.
- No special-category data: faces are blurred before storage and never used for identification. We do not process biometric data.
Acceptable use
- Scan public advertisements: billboards, transit ads, posters, storefront signs, online ads.
- Don’t scan personal property, badges, ID cards, or images of people without their consent.
- Don’t upload illegal, sexual, violent, or harassing content. NSFW content is rejected automatically.
- Don’t spam the app with duplicate scans, fake content, or automated submissions.
- Don’t scrape, reverse-engineer, or hammer the API beyond normal personal use.
- Stay safe.Don’t scan while driving. Don’t trespass on private property to capture an ad.
How sharing works
Your scans are private by default. They appear only on your personal map. They do NOT appear on the global /top feed unless you explicitly tap the “Share to /top” toggle. You can un-share or delete at any time.
Face blur
Photos run through on-device face detection (MediaPipe) before upload. Detected faces are pixelated client-side. This is best-effort and not guaranteed to catch every face — faces turned away, partially obscured, or very small may slip through. If that happens, please delete the scan or contact the operator.
Your content
You retain ownership of photos you upload. By scanning, you grant the operator a non-exclusive, royalty-free license to store the photo privately and serve it back to you, plus — if you opt to share — to display it on the global /top feed and in scan permalink pages. The operator may delete content that violates these terms.
AI classification accuracy
Classifications come from Claude (Anthropic) and may be wrong. The “AI DETECTED” label is an automated guess. Use the Report button if a classification is incorrect.
Liability
Because this is a free, non-commercial hobby project, the service is provided on an “as-available” basis with no warranty of fitness for any purpose. The operator is not liable for damages arising from your use of the service to the maximum extent permitted by applicable law. This does not exclude liability that cannot be excluded by law (such as personal injury from operator negligence, where applicable).
Changes
These terms may change as the project evolves. The “Last updated” date at the top of this page reflects the current version. Continued use after a change means you accept the new terms.
Contact
For privacy requests, data-protection inquiries, takedown requests, or any other concerns, contact the project operator via the project repository.
